If there’s one thing being a mom of nearly 10 years has taught me it’s that kids LOVE play food. The amount of play food we’ve gone through over the years is countless! My kids had a great play kitchen equip with pots and pans for cooking their beloved play meals where countless hours were spent pretending to be masterful chefs. Now that they’re older, the kitchen is gone as are most of their plastic play foods, but one thing that’s always remained are the crocheted fruits and vegetables I made for them many years ago. My youngest cherishes them the most, and while she may be becoming a bigger kid these days, I can still peek into her bedroom at any given time and find her hard at play with those well worn play foods.
And that is exactly what inspired me to create a crocheted breakfast play set! My daughter absolutely loves breakfast. One day she approached me and being the keeper of the BEST ideas ever, she threw this one my way. “Mom, why not make a crocheted breakfast set?” Naturally, it had to be done! And so we brainstormed together our favorite breakfast foods and what truly would complete this fantastic set and here it is for me to share with you. I hope you and the littlest people in your lives enjoy it as much as we have!
Materials:
- 4.5mm crochet hook
- Cotton yarn in colors pumpkin, tan, medium brown, dark brown, yellow, and white
- Embroidery Needle
Bacon
Use both pumpkin and tan colored yarn. You will hold these strands of yarn together as you crochet.
Ch 18. In 2nd ch from hook begin to sc your way back to the original chain for a total of 17 sc. Ch 2 and turn. You will now work in rows.
Row 1: dc in each st; ch 1 and turn (17)
Row 2: hdc in each st; ch 1 and turn (17)
At this point you will drop the pumpkin color and cut to leave a tail for weaving in later. Continue on with the tan yarn only.
Row 3: sc in each st across (17) Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Scrambled Egg
Egg White
Use white yarn
6sc in a magic circle
Round 1: inc in each st around (12)
Round 2: *inc in 1st st, sc in next st*; repeat around (18)
Round 3: inc in 1st st, sc in next 2 sts*; repeat around (24)
Round 4: *dc in 1st 4 sts, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 2 sts*; repeat once more (24)
Round 5: sc in each st around (24) Fasten off weaving in all the ends.
Yolk
Use yellow yarn
6sc in a magic circle
Round 1: inc in each st around (12)
Round 2: inc in each st around (24) Fasten off leaving a long thread for sewing
Sew your yolk to the center of your egg white.
Toast
Use tan yarn
Ch 14. Starting from 2nd ch work hdc sts all the way down for a total of 13 sts. Ch 1 and turn. You will now work in rows.
Rows 1-6: hdc in each st across; ch 1 and turn (13)
Row 7: ch 3. Skip 1st 3 sts and insert 8 dc in the 4th st. sl st into next 2 sts. Skip the next 4. Insert 9 dc into the 3rd from last st of the row. Sl st into last st and fasten off.
Change to dark brown cotton yarn.
Sc a border around your toast piece being sure to place 3sc in each bottom corner of your toast. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Pancakes (make as many as you’d like for a stack)
Use medium brown yarn

Round 1: inc in each st around (12)
Round 2: *inc in 1st st, sc in the next st*; repeat around (18)
Round 3:*inc in 1st st, sc in the next 2 sts*; repeat around (24)
Round 4:*inc in 1st st, sc in the next 3 sts*; repeat around (30)
Round 5:*inc in 1st st, sc in the next 4 sts*; repeat around (36)
Round 6:*inc in 1st st, sc in the next 5 sts*; repeat around (42)
Round 7:*inc in 1st st, sc in the next 6 sts*; repeat around (48)
Change to tan yarn here
Round 8:sc in each st around (48) Fasten off and weave in ends
Maple Syrup
Use dark brown yarn
6sc in a magic circle
Round 1: inc in each st around (12)
Round 2: *inc in 1st st, sc in the next st*; repeat around (18)
Round 3:*inc in 1st st, sc in the next 2 sts*; repeat around (24)
Round 4:*inc in 1st st, sc in the next 3 sts*; repeat around (30)
Round 5:*dc in first 4 sts, sc in the next 3, tr in next 3 sts, sc in next 2 sts, tr in next 3*; repeat once more. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Butter
Use yellow yarn
Ch 5. In 2nd chain from hook begin to sc all the way back to the original ch st for a total of 4 sc. Ch 1 and turn. You will now work in rows.
Rows 1-3:sc across (4) Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Now you will want to sew the butter to the top of the syrup and sew the syrup piece to the middle of your top pancake.
That’s about it! Now find some time and go PLAY! I can’t guarantee that this breakfast will be the most delicious one you’ve ever had, but it sure will be fun! The best part of all is that in using 100% cotton yarn, this set will be completely washable! If it gets dirty just feel free to throw it in the washer and dry on low. How great is that? My daughter loves to play in the bath and had endless amounts of play time when she brought this set in the tub with her! Bonus points go towards the fact that the bigger pieces can be used in place of a wash cloth for scrubbing! She said that the bubbles were from the bacon and egg frying 🙂
